Dr Heena Lakhdhir

Heena is a New Zealand trained obstetrician and gynaecologist with more than 20 years of experience in New Zealand and India. She is a specialist at Middlemore hospital where she leads the diabetes in pregnancy service. She was part of the team that set up the preterm birth service at Middlemore and continues to lead this service and train specialists in the care of women who are at risk of preterm birth. Heena has a special interest in high risk obstetrics and medical conditions in pregnancy. She has been a key member of the group writing the new national diabetes in pregnancy guideline and is involved in the NZ wide implementation of this. She has research interests and papers in perinatal medicine and diabetes in pregnancy. She is involved in training and teaching Midwives and doctors to become Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a passionate advocate for women centred care and respectful, weight neutral care for women in bigger bodies.

When not at work she is a classical Indian dancer performing at festivals and cultural events. She also enjoys swimming, biking and golf with her husband and daughter.
