Profile

I came to East Otago Health after practising for 21 years in Golden Bay and combine my GP practise with a role as medical advisor at South Link Health Services in Dunedin, and a teaching post with the University of Otago Department of General Practice and Rural Health. I can’t say I have special interests in general practice – part of the challenge and satisfaction of this broad speciality is to try to help each patient who comes to you, whatever their needs and concerns. Beyond practise, my interests are in teaching, the interactions between health professionals and patients, and the sustainable delivery of extended health services in the community.

Born and brought up in Dundee, Scotland, I completed my medical training at the University of Aberdeen and in the North East of Scotland. I came to New Zealand in 1991 and met my wife, Margie, in Auckland. She brought me to the Mainland where we have been since and have brought up our two children, Hamish and Frances. I love to ski, tramp, kayak, sail, read and garden, and watch all wildlife, from spiders to whales!
