Dr Elliott graduated from the University of BC, Vancouver, Canada in 1975 before moving to New Zealand to complete and internship at Waikato Hospital. After outback Medicine experience with the Flying Doctor Service in Queensland, Australia, and a one year surgical residency at Vancouver General hospital he decided to move into General Practice.

In 1979 he joined a General Practice surgery in Edgemont Village, North Vancouver where he stayed until 1991 when he relocated his family to Hamilton, NZ to enjoy a more rural lifestyle. In 2007 the Practice he owned in Hukanui was purchased by the Radius group and Jon took on a contract as a GP and Teacher for Family Practice Residents. During this time he would do summer locum stints in the small ferry-bound community of Powell River, BC, Canada. He eventually moved to Canada to assist with extreme doctor shortage in rural Canada.

Jon and his wife returned to New Zealand in 2018 to be closer to their four children and 6 grandchildren and works 3 days a week at WMC.
