Haemorrhoids (Piles)

Haemorrhoids are a condition where the vessels under the lining in the anal canal are congested and enlarged. Less severe haemorrhoids can be managed with simple treatments such as injection or banding. Larger ones will require surgery.

Haemorrhoids usually cause painless bleeding. If they are very large they can prolapse with the bowel motion.

It is important to realise that other conditions can mimic haemorrhoids. Therefore any bleeding or new bowel symptom should be investigated fully.

Haemorrhoid Surgery
I tend to use the Stapled Haemorrhoidectomy technique now which uses a circular stapling device to excise the excess tissue and pull the remaining haemorrhoid back into its normal position. It is more comfortable that other techniques but still can take a couple of weeks to recover.
