Profile

Dr Thaya Ashman brings over two decades of doctoring experience, her compassion, care and energy to the patients and families at Mount Eden Village Doctors.

Thaya qualified in 1999 & has worked as a GP since 2004. The majority of her work has been with high needs patients, with multiple co morbidities and complex endemic, inter-generational, psychological and social issues. She has worked in a variety of multi-ethnic locations here in New Zealand and globally.

Thaya enjoys all aspects of general practice, is a strong patient advocate & enjoys caring for people throughout their lives. She is particularly interested in mental health and the effects of trauma on personal wellbeing.

Through her broad and extensive experience, she has become increasingly interested in the often complex, systemic reasons as to why people have poor health and what can be done to influence global & national systems that are causing harm.

Thaya completed her medical degree in 1999 at Manchester in the UK. She went on to work primarily in internal medicine, also mental health, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgical and emergency medicine. She has experience working in a number of developing countries, notably Afghanistan under the previous Taliban government. Thaya maintains an active interest in refugee health, infectious diseases and tropical medicine.

Thaya's husband is originally from Taranaki, they are community leaders in Panmure and have three children, two at high school. Thaya enjoys her outdoor activities, fitness and is developing an interest in gardening. She writes poetry and is a supporter of the arts.
