Colin graduated from Otago University in 1977. He trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in New Zealand before completing his training in the United Kingdom. Colin worked at the Queen's Mothers Hospital and Western Infirmary Glasgow, Scotland before returning to a Senior Consultant role at Christchurch Women's Hospital.

Married with three children and one grandson.
