Referral Process
Referrals can be received for people in the justice system who are going through or have been through the court process, have been charged with an offense or are in an adult prison. These people must have or be suspected of having a current significant mental health and/or co-existing disorder.
People are admitted into these units from two main sources. They are either referred from the courts for assessment and/or treatment as part of the judicial process, or they are admitted from prison for psychiatric care and treatment.
Description
The main function of Rangipapa is to provide in a safe and secure environment for people who have been admitted into hospital for assessment and/or treatment through the criminal justice system.
Each person admitted to the inpatient unit has a multi-disciplinary team assigned to them. They are assessed by medical staff on the day of admission, and later during their stay by other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
We aim to strengthen family resilience by providing family inclusive services. For instance, we work with families and whānau to restore the wellbeing of their family member and family by maintaining or building social supports. Our aim is to help clients recover in a safe and supportive environment.
Everyone admitted into the inpatient area is compulsorily detained under either the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment & Treatment) and/or the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Acts.
