A Girl Called Hope is a non–profit organisation working with young women who face life–controlling issues and behaviour such as abuse, addictions, depression, anxiety, disordered eating, self harm and unplanned pregnancy.
We exist to provide a future full of hope and potential to every young woman – to show her she is valued, purposed and, above all, has a reason to live.

If you are a young woman between the ages of 16 and 28 and are motivated to change, we invite you to begin the application process. Click here to download an application and follow the instructions.
Before applying, please consider that, as a voluntary programme, each young woman must complete the application and all aspects of the process herself. All legal issues must be resolved before being eligible for the programme. The young woman applying must also make the intake phone interview appointment herself, once she has sent in her application. Each situation is considered individually, however, to ensure fair treatment all young women applying must complete the entire application process to ensure they are suitable for this programme setting.
A Girl Called Hope exists to see young women reach their full potential through participation in a voluntary structured, residential programme. The programme is open to women aged 16 – 28 years, from anywhere in NZ, and consists of the following three phases:
- Residential Programme
- Transitional Care
Participants on the programme live on–site for approximately six months (with regular weekend leave to test skills and practice tools gained), and have a structured daily routine tailored to the issues they are working through. Residents are actively supported by the programme staff, with access to other health professionals as necessary. A programme has been developed which encompasses life skills development, career advice, communication skills, emotion regulation skills practice and weekly individual counselling and Group process. The practical skills of cooking, cleaning, and budgeting are also integrated into the programme. Each young woman participates in the daily running of the home, and is involved in recreation that includes team building and community activities.
Following graduation from the Residential Programme, each graduate is supported by an accountability mentor in their community for 12 months, as well as being supported by the Transitional Care Coordinator of A Girl Called Hope.
The Team consists of:
- The Intake Coordinator who assists applicants to the programme to ensure suitability to meet their current needs.
- In the Residential Home the Programme Assistant, Household Manager, Counsellors and Kaitautoko all work to provide a holistic programme within a safe environment. A qualified nutrition health professional is contracted to A Girl Called Hope part–time and residents access external specialist medical services as required.
- The Transitional Care Coordinator provides support for Accountability Mentors as part of our awhi of programme graduates back in their community.
- The Team is supported by the Programme Manager, Makerita Siaosi (who is responsible for programme staff and therapeutic oversight), and the Executive Director, Kerry Petrie who has oversight of the organisation and accountability to our Board of Trustees.

The programme is provided free of charge for young women aged 16 to 28 years. Residents are responsible for medical costs, travel costs for weekend leave and personal cares expenses. Donations towards the running costs are expected from residents (similar to school donations) and this is discussed during the application process.
