Description
Our vision is to educate, support and treat severe anxiety, phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders. In doing so, the Anxiety New Zealand Trust works with all ethnic, socio-economic groups and across all ages.
The Anxiety New Zealand Trust (Anxiety NZ) is a registered charitable trust and an NGO (Non-Government Organisation). The Anxiety New Zealand Trust was established 5 February 1983, and incorporated in 1987- under the Charities Act. Charities Commission No: CC20141.
By achieving the above vision, the Anxiety New Zealand Trust has worked towards demystifying the severe anxiety, phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders with depression and their co-morbid states.
The Trust provides services as per the Mission Statement:
- 24 hour National Anxiety Helpline 0800 ANXIETY (0800 2694 38)
- Peer Support Groups on Monday, Thurs eve and Saturdays (funded)
- In-person St Lukes based service with online therapy options (including national referrals)
- Multi-disciplinary treatment team (see below).
- Intern programme for psychologists in partnership with Universities.

What is the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor who specialises in identifying the symptoms of and diagnosing and treating mental health issues. They are also able to prescribe medication if needed. You may have been referred to a psychiatrist if your doctor feels you need specialist help. The Anxiety New Zealand Trust has a GP with a MOSS Psychiatric speciality, Dr Henry Plant.
A psychologist is not a doctor but has completed degrees in the scientific study of the mind and its activities and all of our psychologists are registered with the New Zealand Psychological Board. They are able to assess and test for mental health issues but do not prescribe medication. Psychologists offer therapy using a range of approaches depending on the client's individual needs. Anxiety New Zealand Trust psychologists offer Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Family/Systems Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and a range of other therapies which are used in accordance with the needs and age of the client. Therapeutic workshops and support groups for clients are offered as well as support groups for family and whānau.
How Much Does it Cost and Can I Get Funding?
If you are a low-income earner, or a caregiver of a child who would benefit from treatment, then you may get funding to see a psychologist. Our team will help by giving advice, providing and signing the forms. You will need to upload or take these to Studylink or Work and Income. Please see below for income thresholds for adults. There are no income thresholds for the caregivers of children needing therapy.
Health Insurance may apply - please check with your insurer. Please note, if you have Southern Cross Insurance you will need to see one of our Clinical Psychologists to be covered.
International Students may be covered under their travel insurance.

Referral Process
Referrals are accepted from any health professional e.g. general practitioners, Community Mental Health Services, AOD Services, mental health workers, nurses, the Courts, ACC and school counsellors.
Self and whānau referrals may be considered - further information may be sought from a health professional.
When referring a patient/client, please include information about their medical history - psychological symptoms, past interventions, medication and any other relevant medical history. Please also include information about the symptoms that they are currently presenting with and any medication that they are currently being prescribed.

Referral Process
For 1:1 services or Peer Groups please ask a health professional such as a GP or counsellor for a referral to our service. Referrers can do this in a variety of ways - by email, fax, on our website, through their Practice Management System or if they give you a copy of the referral you can take a photo and email to or drop it to our service in our opening hours.
You can also visit our website https://www.anxiety.org.nz/contact-us to complete a 'request for services form' or a family / whānau member with consent can complete a 'family / whānau referral'. In most situations we will also ask for a health professional referral alongside. We aim to try and help people access the right service and clinician the first time and a referral helps us to do this.

If you’re feeling anxious and would like to talk to someone about anxiety relief – wherever you are in New Zealand – you can phone our free 24 hour Helpline: 0800 ANXIETY (0800 269 4389) Our Helpline gives vital support to hundreds of people each month who experience all forms of anxiety, including Panic Attacks and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. If you experience anxiety, or have an anxious relative or friend you’d like to help, please call us for support and information about anxiety and anxiety management strategies. This service if completely confidential and free of charge. It is the only service of its type in New Zealand. We will listen and support you with empathy and unconditional acceptance. We can take you through breathing and relaxation exercises that are really effective in minimising feelings of anxiety and panic. We can discuss practical strategies you can learn and apply whenever anxiety and panic starts to feel overwhelming. We will offer encouragement, education, and advice for anyone who is supporting someone struggling with anxiety. Who Can Call: Anyone who is struggling with ongoing stress, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Phobias, and associated issues. Concerned family members, loved ones, and supporters of anyone in an anxiety-related crisis.

Public Transport
There are buses that stop on Morningside Drive travelling to and from town. There is also a bus stop outside St Lukes Mall on St Lukes Road.
Some of the bus routes that stop near the Trust are the 011 from Onehunga, 006 and 007 from Mt Albert, 223 from New Lynn (via Avondale) or from Midtown, and the 224 from Henderson (via New Lynn and Avondale).
