Description

At Balance in Whanganui we provide Peer Support, Education and Advocacy to people seeking wellbeing and recovery with mental health or addiction issues.

Balance Aotearoa is the National Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO) under the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People and advocates for the rights of people with psychosocial disability/mental health issues in the DPO Coalition.

We believe people living with mental health challenges are not their diagnoses and are people with strengths, experiences and abilities enabling them to pursue and maintain wellbeing.

We have a great staff team consisting of our General Manager, Team Leader, Business Administrator along with our amazing Peer Support and Advocacy Workers with varying hours.

Peer Support, Education and Advocacy

At Balance the focus is largely about the relationships and learning that can be fostered here. Each and every one of us has something to offer, and often great value can be found through our own lived experiences with mental health struggles and/or addictions. We believe that it is through our relationships with each other that hope and the discovery of what really matters to us can emerge. We offer: A safe learning community of peers Wellness and resilience courses – WRAP plan Mindfulness Compassion course Lifestyle management programme Peer support groups and conversation space AOD support groups Art Therapy/group Cultural awareness group Navigation to other community services Advocacy One on one intentional peer support Educational speakers Extensive library Partnership with Te Whatu Ora Whanganui Mental Health & Addiction services. Balance provides Peer Support services within Te Whatu Ora Whanganui - Te Awhina and Te Whatu Ora Whanganui - Stanford House. It also operates as Consumer Consultant working with Te Whatu Ora Whanganui management team and staff to ensure the service users perspective is part of mental health and addictions service planning, policy development and review, recruitment, and service-wide decision-making.
