What is a DHB based mental health service?
A district health board (DHB) mental health service is funded by and is a part of a district health board. Their services vary from inpatient care to outpatient and community based services and they are often involved in the treatment of people with acute or moderate-to-evere mental illness. DHB mental health services employ psychiatrists and many other healthcare workers. They generally have a clinical treatment focus and include psychological and social support. To be seen by a DHB based mental health service a referral is usually required from your doctor.
