Description

Hohepa is a disability service provider, catering for special needs children, and adults with an intellectual disability, where respect, personal development and caring go hand-in-hand.

In Hawke’s Bay, Hohepa has a school and homes for children, and services for adults. The adult service includes a range of residential life-styles and daytime “Vocational services”. In Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, services cater for adults, with residential support and day services programmes. The Auckland service includes support to young adults making the transition from schooling, into services and community of their choice.

Hohepa staff offer support to pupils and adult service-users, helping them to lead lives filled with meaning and purpose.

Four communities throughout New Zealand
Each Hohepa region has a vibrant adult residential community in – Titirangi, Auckland, Hohepa Hawke’s Bay in Clive and homes in the urban areas of Napier and Hohepa Canterbury around Barrington Street, Christchurch as well as on its farm in Halswell. Hohepa Hawkes Bay also has several children’s homes for residential care at its farm site in Poraiti. Hohepa Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury have areas for farm work experience and a range of on-site day activities. These day services are also available to people who are not part of the residential services. Hohepa Wellington is a new community (est. 2015), on a small area of land in Kapiti, and is actively developing relationships in the local area to build opportunities for adults in that service.

Hohepa Auckland also has day services for adults, with its Helios service located nearby – a service for adults who reside with the residential service, as well as other intellectually disabled people living at their own home.

All services actively work seeking and creating opportunities to enable people with an intellectual disability to be a part of the local communities where they are located.

The new Hohepa service was started in Kapiti, Wellington in 2015. Set on a five-hectare pocket of land at the edge of Paraparaumu, this new service for people with intellectual disabilities will evolve in response to current principles of “Enabling Good Lives”, making possible a lifestyle like all others of a similar age, founded on principles of anthroposophy. The site enables space for work gardening and looking after animals like the chooks, while being easily within reach of community amenities and organisations in Paraparaumu. The trains service mean access to the Greater Wellington area is easy also.

The Hohepa School, Hawke’s Bay, is unique in New Zealand as the only school where children can be placed in a residential service and attend the school as a part of that same service. It enables consistency in approach across home & school life for the development of the whole child, through Curative Education “Social Pedagogy”.

A feature of Hohepa Auckland is a unique transition service, assisting families of special needs school leavers to explore options for living and other support services.
