Hepatitis C Pharmacy Test and Treat
The pharmacy is contracted to manage hepatitis C in consultation with the patient. This involves an initial finger-prick test for hepatitis C. If the test is positive, the pharmacy will organise further blood tests to confirm infection. The pharmacist can also offer treatment with Maviret if appropriate. This service is free for eligible patients 16 years and over. Patients do not need an appointment.
Our specially trained pharmacists can test for hepatitis C exposure while you wait in the pharmacy. This test takes 10 to 20 minutes and is free of charge. If you have a positive test, this means you have been exposed to hepatitis C in the past. You may or may not have a current infection. We will advise what you need to do should you have a positive test result.
Detecting hepatitis C is important, because it is easily treated with an 8 to 16 week course of an antiviral medicine called Maviret. If left untreated, hepatitis C might lead to liver disease including liver cancer.
