Unichem Papatoetoe Pharmacy are a professional and enthusiastic team committed to providing quality pharmacy services.

Pharmacists can help to support the health of your family; they can provide advice and treatment for common minor illnesses for all ages.

Pharmacists ensure that prescriptions are dispensed correctly and that the medicine and dose is appropriate for you, so that you receive the maximum benefits from your medicines. Your pharmacist will help you understand what your medicines are prescribed for, how to take them, possible side effects and how to store them.

All advice and treatment is conducted in a professional and confidential manner and most services are provided free of charge and do not generally require an appointment.

For safe disposal, please return any expired or unwanted medicines, or needles/lancets and syringes to your pharmacy. There is no charge for this service.

It is very important that you receive regular blood tests while you are taking clozapine and these will be organised through your prescribing healthcare professional. We will check your blood tests to make sure the appropriate dose of clozapine is dispensed for you.

Aseptic dispensing

This pharmacy is approved to do aseptic dispensing. This includes preparing eye drops and sterile syringes (for syringe drivers). These products are made by our staff in a sterile environment so that they are safe to use. Aseptic dispensing is the process often required to provide medication to the terminally ill.

Community pharmacy anticoagulant management Service (CPAMS) – INR testing for warfarin patients

Warfarin is used by some people as a blood thinning medicine e.g. after a stroke. It is important that blood results are regularly checked. This service involves having a quick test (finger prick) in the pharmacy to work out the correct dose. This saves you a trip to your local laboratory and waiting for your blood test to be processed. It is a service that is provided in partnership with your own doctor. All results are automatically sent to your doctor and unusual results will always be checked with your doctor.

This pharmacy has trained pharmacists who can supply the antibiotics nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim for urinary tract infections. These are available without a prescription to women between 16 and 65 years of age, who are not pregnant and do not have any other complicating factors. The pharmacist will complete a consultation to make sure the medicine is appropriate and refer you to the GP if required.

Our pharmacists are trained to provide the oral contraceptive to women without a doctor's prescription. Certain terms and conditions apply and you do need to have been prescribed your pill by your doctor within the last 3 years to be eligible. Please ask us if this service is available to you.

Sildenafil dispensing for erectile dysfunction

This pharmacy has specially trained pharmacists who are able to prescribe sildenafil (also called Viagra®, Vedafil® and Silvasta®) for erectile dysfunction in men aged 35 – 70 years who meet specific assessment criteria.

To STOP gout attacks and the development of bony joint tophi you need to bring your "uric acid' levels down. This pharmacy provides a Gout Monitoring and Prevention service in conjunction with your own doctor. The service involves initiating medication that stops your body making too much uric acid. Your uric acid levels are checked via a regular fingerprick to make sure they are at the right level. If your levels don't come down sufficiently you may need to take a stronger dose of the medicine. GOUT can be a sign you could get diabetes, heart disease and kidney problems. It can be very painful and stop you doing all the things you enjoy. If there continues to be high levels of uric acid in your blood the acid can turn into crystals in your joints especially your toes, knees, elbows, wrists and fingers. This pharmacy has been registered to dispense Maviret (glecaprevir and pibrentasvir) for the treatment of Hep C and to provide you with counselling to support your treatment. You will not have to pay any pharmacy charges for your Maviret.

This pharmacy provides a custom measure and fit service for compression stockings. We get a number of referrals from the Middlemore Hospital Vascular Clinic for patients with varicose veins. We also measure and fit stockings for PREGNANCY and TRAVEL.

Up to six months’ supply of selected oral contraceptives can be sold to women who have previously been prescribed the same oral contraceptive within the last three years and who have not developed any risk factors. There is a charge for both the medicine and the consultation when you receive this service.
