Referral Expectations

Dr Smith requires a GP referral for all patients who are new to the practice. This is to ensure that urgent problems can be prioritised. A referral is also helpful so the medical history and any medications taken are clear, along with history of any treatments already tried for the problem.  Please note most insurance policies do not provide cover for people seeking a general skin check where there is no specific concern.

Consultations
Consultations take about 20 minutes and involve talking about the problem and examination of the lesion or rash of concern. It is most helpful to come for the review without wearing makeup that hides the site. Although makeup can be removed it is best to come with a clean face where possible. Most patients who come for review of a skin lesion will also have a full skin check.

Some skin conditions can be diagnosed just by looking at them.  The shape, size, colour and location are all assessed, as well as any other symptoms.  At times a biopsy is recommended so that a diagnosis can confirmed. A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of the skin/lesion for examination under a microscope.  Minor surgery may be needed to perform this biopsy. In some cases the whole lesion will be removed and examined.
