Zaven Panossian is a Specialist Physician, Diabetologist and Endocrinologist with wide experience in the management of diabetes and various medical and endocrine disorders. He welcomes referrals from General Practitioners and Specialist colleagues and is able to review patients at the Mercy Specialist Centre on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons.
Utmost health and safety precautions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic are followed at the rooms. In addition Zaven is available to provide consultations through a user-friendly voice and video Telemedicine Facility for off-site face-to-face consultations which are covered by Southern Cross and other major health insurance providers.
Zaven also holds a full time Specialist Physician and Endocrinologist role at Middlemore Hospital and provides specialist  DXA bone density scan reports at Auckland Bone Density.
Urgent appointments are available within 1-2 weeks.
Zaven’s interests and expertise include:
  • Diabetes – including diabetes in pregnancy and diabetes treated with insulin pumps.
  • The Metabolic Syndrome – including hypertension, dyslipidaemia and obesity.
  • Thyroid disorders – including Graves’ disease, various types of thyroiditis and autonomous and toxic thyroid nodules including thyroid cancer.
  • Parathyroid disorders, osteoporosis and Paget's disease of the bone.
  • Pituitary disorders – including hyperprolactinaemia, pituitary adenomas and hypopituitarism.
  • Adrenal disorders - including hyperaldosteronism, Cushing’s syndrome and Addison’s disease.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Male hypogonadism.
What is Endocrinology ?
Endocrinology is the science of hormones. Hormones are chemicals produced by one part of the body and act upon another part. 
Your endocrinologist is a specialist doctor interested in diseases that affect your hormones. The major areas endocrinologists work in are:
  • diabetes
  • osteoporosis & Paget’s Disease
  • thyroid diseases
  • sex hormone imbalances
  • disorders of growth and development
  • disorders of the pituitary gland.


Referral Expectations

You will be referred by your General Practitioner (GP) to an endocrinologist if you have a problem with any part of your endocrine system (the system that makes hormones). You may be asked to undergo some tests or fill in a questionnaire before seeing the specialist to help with the diagnosis. 

You may have ongoing follow-up with the specialist or have your treatment carried out by your GP with advice from the specialist.
