Westgate Medical Centre, 13E Maki Street, Westgate, Auckland

John Jarvis is a New Zealand trained General and Colorectal Surgeon. His training in colorectal surgery took place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in England and the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. John has held appointments in public with Waitemata DHB at North Shore and Waitakere hospitals for over 10 years.

His primary interest area is laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery for both benign and malignant conditions, an interest developed whilst being exposed to high volumes of such surgery in his UK appointment. In Norwich he also enhanced his skill in colonoscopy at a unit which was internationally known for its training techniques in this procedure.

John continues his practice in diverse areas of general surgery including surgery for gallstones, hernias, pilonidal sinus disease and simple & complex proctology. He also undertakes treatment of haemorrhoids at his private practice.

Private patients are seen at Waitemata Specialist Centre, Westgate and Silverdale, and colonoscopy and gastroscopy is performed by John at Waitemata Endoscopy.

What is General Surgery?
The role of the general surgeon varies, but in broad terms general surgery can be said to deal with a wide range of conditions within the abdomen, breast, neck, skin and, in many cases, vascular (blood vessel) system. While the name would suggest that the focus of general surgery is to perform operations, often this is not the case. Many patients are referred to surgeons with conditions that do not need surgical procedures, but merely require counselling or medical treatment.

What is Colorectal Surgery?
The colon and the rectum are part of the digestive tract that processes the food we eat. Together they make up the large intestine or large bowel and are located in the abdomen between the small intestine and the anus. The colon is about 1.8m long and absorbs water and nutrients from food. The rectum is the last segment of the large intestine and is about 20 -25cm long. This is where waste material is stored before it passes out of the body through the anus.
A colorectal surgeon is a general surgeon who has had further training and specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus.

Mr John Jarvis is a Southern Cross affiliated provider for a range of procedures including the following service catergories:

  • Gastroenterology (digestive system)
  • General surgery (breast, gallbladder, hernia)
  • Skin cancer diagnosis & surgery
  • Varicose veins.
