Mr Philip Allen - Colorectal & General Surgeon

Private Service, General Surgery

I have been working in full-time private practice as a colorectal and general surgeon in Auckland since 1995. I trained in Auckland before spending a number of years in the UK and Australia. I later undertook an advanced 2 year Colorectal Fellowship in Melbourne and Auckland.

The majority of my practice now is in colorectal surgery although I still maintain some aspects of general surgery such as laparoscopic herniae, gallbladder and pilonidal disease.

I practice both colonoscopy and gastroscopy at:

Colorectal surgery includes:
  • Anal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas
  • Pelvic floor problems causing difficulty in defaecation or faecal incontinence
  • Colorectal diseases such as bowel cancer and diverticular disease.
Most of my colonic surgery is done laparoscopically, which means using telescopes. This gives significantly better recovery after surgery with no compromise in operative standards, especially with bowel cancer.

Referral Expectations

When you come to your appointment, I will ask questions about your illness and examine you to try to determine or confirm the diagnosis. The examination may require the use of a small enema 1-2 hours before the appointment. My secretary will explain this if needed.

A number of blood tests or X-rays may need to be ordered.
Some conditions such as bleeding haemorrhoids can be treated at the same visit.
Once a diagnosis has been made, I will discuss treatment with you. In some instances this will mean surgery, while other cases can be managed with medication and advice. If surgery is advised, the steps involved in the surgical process and the likely outcome are usually discussed with you at this time. A definite booking for surgery can usually be made at the same visit.
