We have a medical solution for those patients where surgery isn't a viable option or who want to avoid invasive procedures. Our nutritional, exercise and psychological program along with a prescription medication (Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, Saxenda® or Contrave®) intervention, assists patients to lose weight without surgery and to help sustain weight loss long-term.

We know losing weight and keeping it off can be hard, and it involves much more than eating less, moving more and having motivation. When you lose weight, it causes changes in the levels of hormones that affect your appetite. This can cause your body to work against you as it tries to gain back the weight you have lost, by making you feel more hungry and increasing your desire to eat. All of the medications we offer to assist with weight loss work by altering gut hormones and brain chemicals to take away hunger and food ‘noise’ and help you to make better decisions in regards to food choice and behaviour.

Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a combination drug consisting of two gut hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) that help control appetite, improve fullness and manage blood sugars. Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Saxenda® (liraglutide) are also GLP-1 medications that work in a similar way, regulating appetite and improving satiety. Contrave® (naltrexone and bupropion) is another combination drug that works on the brain’s hunger and reward pathways to reduce cravings.

Bariatric or weight loss surgery refers to a number of different procedures that can be performed to treat obesity. Procedures fall into three main types:

Malabsorptive - these procedures involve bypassing a section of the small intestine thus reducing the amount of food absorbed into the body.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass involves bypassing a section of the intestine so that less food is absorbed.

Restrictive - these procedures involve reducing the size of the stomach, usually by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach which limits the amount of food that can be eaten.

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding is a surgical treatment for obesity that involves placing an inflatable cuff around the upper stomach. The cuff can be further inflated or deflated to adjust the volume of food that can be consumed.

Malabsorptive/Restrictive Combination - these procedures combine both techniques e.g. gastric bypass surgery in which a small stomach pouch is formed and its outlet connected to part of the small intestine.

This service offers support to people who are overweight or obese to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss approaches may involve diet and lifestyle changes or weight loss medications, or both may be offered.
