Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Surgery
Arthrocentesis lysis and lavage: The joint space is inflated with a special isotonic fluid and following this further fluid is flushed through the joint space while the jaw joint is gently manipulated. This procedure is useful for restoring jaw function to a previously locked jaw joint.
Arthroplasty (Open Surgery): an incision is made in front of the ear, giving the surgeon access to reconstruct the joint by e.g. smoothing joint surfaces, repairing discs or removing diseased tissue. If a joint replacement is necessary, a second incision under the angle of the jaw may be required.
