What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a modern medical specialty that uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques—such as X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, or MRI—to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that once required open surgery.

Instead of large cuts or long recoveries, IR procedures are usually performed through a pinhole-sized entry, often as a day procedure.

Staff

Our interventional radiologists bring world-class training and experience from top centres in Europe and North America. They have worked in high-volume academic hospitals and now bring their expertise back to New Zealand.

Image guided procedures | Interventional radiology

Image guided procedures in radiology use imaging technologies such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI to help doctors perform minimally invasive procedures such as biopsies and injections. The imaging allows doctors to be more precise, which often means less pain and faster recovery for the patient.

Embolisation

Embolisation is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure used to block abnormal or excessive blood flow. A small catheter is inserted into an artery (usually from the wrist or groin) and guided to the target area, where tiny particles or coils are delivered to reduce blood supply. This can help treat conditions such as bleeding, tumours, fibroids, or chronic pain by shrinking abnormal tissue or reducing inflammation. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia with a short recovery time. Services and indication: GAE (Genicular Artery Embolisation) - Chronic Knee pain TAME (Trans Arterial Micro Embolisation) Achilles tendonitis Elbow pain Hip pain Plantar fasciitis Shoulder pain Uterine Artery Embolisation Uterine fibroid Adenomyosis Prostate Artery Embolisation Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Intractable Chronic Prostatitis Haemorrhoidal Artery Embolisation Haemorrhoids Renal Artery Embolisation Angiomyolipoma Ovarian Vein Embolisation Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

Ablations

Ablation is a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment that destroys abnormal tissue using heat, cold, or electrical energy. A thin probe is inserted through the skin into the target area (such as a tumour), and energy is applied to precisely treat the tissue while sparing surrounding structures. It is commonly used for cancers and some benign conditions, and is usually performed as a day-case procedure with a relatively quick recovery. Services: Microwave ablation (MWA), Cryoablation, Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) Liver Kidney Lung Thyroid
