Calum has a particular interest in cardiac risk assessment and cardiac CT scanning, as well as aviation medicine and occupational health. He attends and presents at international meetings in these fields, and undertook a European sabbatical in cardiac CT in 2014.

Calum graduated from the University of Otago and Wellington School of Medicine in 1994. He began his medical career at Tauranga Hospital, before undertaking specialist Cardiology training at Christchurch Hospital. After his appointment as Cardiology Clinical Fellow at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland, Calum returned to Tauranga in 2004 and has never been tempted to leave.

He completed his Master of Aviation Medicine and Post-Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine in 2018, both with distinction. He has an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer appointment in Aviation Medicine at the University of Otago and an Honorary Senior Lecturer post with the Department of Medicine at Auckland University.

Calum is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association of the European Society of Cardiology. Calum is accredited with the Australasian Committee for CT Coronary Angiography. He is a member of the Aerospace Medical Association and the Aviation Medical Society of New Zealand.

His interest in aviation and occupational medicine reflects his awareness that cardiovascular risks and diseases can have significant impact on individuals and their families. He aims to provide a comprehensive and individualised assessment for people referred to him, and to relay that information in a readily-understandable and practical format.
