Profile

Dougal McClean MB ChB, MD, FRACP is an interventional and general cardiologist working in private practice and also at Christchurch Hospital.

After graduating MB ChB from the University of Otago in 1990, he trained in Cardiology at Christchurch Hospital and became a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1999. He was awarded a post graduate Doctorate of Medicine (MD) for research on the effects of combined ACE and NEP inhibition in chronic heart failure. Extensive overseas training in coronary angioplasty and stenting was obtained with a two year interventional fellowship at King’s College Hospital in London, United Kingdom, followed by 18 months as an interventional fellow at Cedar Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles, USA.

As an interventional cardiologist, special interests include complex percutaneous interventions, and new interventional devices and techniques to improve patient outcomes. He is involved in multi-centre interventional trials of second generation drug eluting stent designs, fully dissolving stents, dedicated bifurcation stents, and novel interventional devices to improve outcomes in acute myocardial infarction and coronary bypass grafts.
