Profile

Born and bred in Christchurch, Dr Jim Borthwick is a New Zealand Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, currently the Chair of the New Zealand Branch of RANZCO and Council Member of RANZCO.

Dr Borthwick has been a consultant ophthalmologist, practising in the public hospital and private sector, since 1992. He specialises in refractive cataract surgery, advanced vitreoretinal surgery and medical conditions of the retina. Surgery is performed at Christchurch Eye Surgery and Southern Cross Hospital.

For fifteen years he was the only tertiary referral vitreoretinal surgeon in the South Island. Consulting at Southern Eye Specialists, the private vitreoretinal surgery is provided at Christchurch Eye Surgery with modern, highly specialised vitreoretinal equipment and microscopes.

He is very experienced in cataract surgery and interested in correction of astigmatism and the use of multifocal and accommodating lenses to give the best distance and reading vision.

The management of macular degeneration and other retinal conditions is another major interest of Dr Borthwick, who has extensive experience in the use of intravitreal anti-VEGF injections including Avastin, Lucentis and Eylea. Southern Eye Specialists was the first clinic to use anti-VEGF treatment in Christchurch.

Southern Eye Specialists has high definition OCT scanning, digital photography and fluorescein angiography for the assessment of retinal disease. Southern Eye Specialists has retinal lasers available for treatment of various retinal conditions. Southern Eye Specialists is the only provider of Visudyne Photodynamic Therapy in the South Island and now provides 2RT Nanosecond Laser to treat dry macular degeneration.
