Profile

James has recently returned home to New Zealand from a medical retinal and uveitis sub-specialty fellowship in Oxford, England. He completed his general ophthalmic specialist training in New Zealand. He had previously spent some time prior to his specialist training as a glaucoma research fellow as well. He initially migrated to New Zealand shortly after basic medical training at the University of Nottingham, England.

At present, James also works at Wellington and Hutt Hospitals as a consultant ophthalmologist, where he has played a pivotal role in medical retinal treatment protocols and helped establish a satellite intravitreal injection service at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

His main passion in the practice of ophthalmology is in the utilisation of state-of-the-art ophthalmic multimodal imaging techniques. This allows him to provide the highest standard of individualised care for patients with inherited and acquired medical retinal conditions,  as well as patients with glaucoma. During his time as a registrar, he helped to set up the Wellington regional retinal imaging and angiography service.

James is also a skilled cataract surgeon and uses microincisional phaco-chop techniques, which are widely regarded as the safest and most gentle surgical technique to achieve the best possible post-operative vision. He has a lot of experience in delivering the best possible vision over the long-term to cataract patients who have co-existing eye disease, be it medical retinal conditions or glaucoma.
