Profile

Dr Philip Adamson – BHB, MB ChB, PhD, MPH, FRACP, FCSANZ 

Phil is a General and Interventional Cardiologist with specific expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary and structural heart diseases. He performs complex coronary interventions (stents) and minimally-invasive procedures including transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure. He undertook the South Island’s first transcatheter mitral valve implantations.

Phil graduated from the University of Auckland and undertook his cardiology training at Christchurch Hospital. He continued with a further 6 years of fellowship training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the UK focused on coronary and structural heart interventions. Whilst there, he undertook a PhD at the University of Edinburgh in advanced coronary artery imaging and since returning to NZ he has completed a Master of Public Health. 

In addition to his part-time private practice he is a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Christchurch Heart Institute at the University of Otago, and a Consultant Cardiologist for Canterbury District Health Board. He remains extensively involved in clinical research with over 100 publications and is the principal investigator for several large-scale studies funded by the NZ Health Research Council and the NZ Heart Foundation.
