Liam studied in Dunedin and Christchurch before starting his career as a junior doctor in Hawke's Bay. Urological training took him to Auckland, Christchurch and Tauranga.

After working for two years in the UK, including a Paediatric Urology Fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, he returned to the Bay of Plenty in 2003.
