Profile
Simon is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Grace Hospital with a special interest in upper limb surgery and the latest imaging techniques for the most comprehensive assessment of the treatment area.
Simon MacLean was born in Christchurch and later moved with his family to the UK. He completed medical school in Manchester and held junior doctor jobs in the northwest of England. Simon undertook orthopaedic specialist training in Birmingham, working at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He completed training in trauma surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital – the largest military hospital in the UK, where he was exposed to soldiers with battlefield injuries from Afghanistan and Iraq.
Following completion of the FRCS (Tr & Orth) exam, Simon moved to Adelaide to work with Professor Gregory Bain as an Upper Limb Fellow for 12 months. During this year, Simon gained experience in complex upper limb trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery, including arthroscopy, arthroplasty, infection and soft tissue reconstruction. He then completed a further year as Clinical Fellow in Brisbane at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in both Upper Limb and Microsurgery.
Simon has a keen interest in research and has published over 40 scientific papers and book chapters. He has presented research nationally and internationally. Current research interests include; Kienbock’s disease, distal radius fractures, and advanced imaging techniques of the upper limb, including 4D dynamic CT scanning and SPECT-CT imaging.
Simon enjoys teaching peers and medical students, and supervises a number of undergraduate research projects.
