Urologist with subspecialist training in Robotics and Complex Cancer Surgery.

Andrew trained in New Zealand before completing a subspecialty training in Urological Oncology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada attaining subspecialty qualification from the Society of Urological Oncology. The training not only consisted of high volumes of complex cancer surgery but also extensive exposure to other areas of surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology. He has received numerous awards, research grants and published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. Andrew has also published several book chapters and review articles on the management of both benign prostatic hypertrophy and urological cancers and is a reviewer for numerous international journals including the Journal of Urology and European Urology.

Andrew is a consultant urologist at Auckland District Health Board and Counties Manukau Health. He is chair of the Ministry of Health Urological Cancer Standards Committee and Medical Advisor for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Testicular Cancer NZ. He is an examiner for Urology with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and previously has chaired the NZ Urology Training Board.

What is Urology?
Urology is the branch of medicine that looks at diseases of the urinary system in females and the genitourinary system (urinary system plus genital organs) in males. The urinary system is made up of the:
  • kidneys (where urine is formed from material filtered out of the blood)
  • ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder)
  • bladder (a balloon-like organ that stores urine)
  • sphincter muscles (muscles around the opening of the bladder into the urethra)
  • urethra (the tube that carries urine to the outside of your body).

The male genital organs include the penis, scrotum and prostate gland. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis and in front of the rectum. The urethra passes through the center of the prostate. A doctor who specialises in disorders of the urinary system and also the male reproductive system is known as an urologist. A doctor who specialises in kidneys and their function is called a nephrologist.
