Mr Chris Hawke has a particular interest in urological oncology having undertaken a Fellowship in Miami, USA in 2000 in cancer surgery. He performs brachytherapy (radioactive seed implants) and surgery.

Chris gives balanced advice to men regarding prostate cancer management best suited to their situation. Nerve sparing radical prostatectomy offers men the hope of maintaining normal erectile function.

He is one of the early pioneers of Robotic Prostatectomy in NZ with over a decades experience in this technically demanding procedure. Robotic prostate surgery offers the potential for “keyhole” cancer removal with faster recovery. Laser prostate surgery for non-cancerous prostate enlargement is another strong interest.

Chris specialises in Urological Oncology, with particular focus in:

  • Nerve sparing radical prostatectomy
  • Brachytherapy
  • Laser prostatectomy
  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy
  • Female TVT
  • Peyronie's disease.

Chris is New Zealand's pioneering Thulium Laser surgeon.

  • Thulium laser surgery is the latest development from Germany - this new laser can core out an enlarged prostate with no bleeding and minimal risk of side effects. Read more here

Chris also sees general urological referrals including:

  • Kidney stone disease
  • Vasectomy
  • Stress incontinence.

What is Urology?

Urology is the branch of medicine that looks at diseases of the urinary system in females and the genitourinary system (urinary system plus genital organs) in males. The urinary system is made up of the:

  • kidneys (where urine is formed from material filtered out of the blood)
  • ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder)
  • bladder (a balloon-like organ that stores urine)
  • sphincter muscles (muscles around the opening of the bladder into the urethra)
  • urethra (the tube that carries urine to the outside of your body).

The male genital organs include the penis, scrotum and prostate gland. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis and in front of the rectum. The urethra passes through the center of the prostate. A doctor who specialises in disorders of the urinary system and also the male reproductive system is known as an urologist. A doctor who specialises in kidneys and their function is called a nephrologist.
