Description
Services Provided Under the National Covid Alert Levels:
Alert Level 1 - Normal services continue - may include virtual and in person appointments
Alert Level 2 - Normal services resumed - may include virtual and in person appointments
Alert Level 3 - General services restricted, some virtual appointments to meet clinical urgency
Alert Level 4 - Acute services only
Service Provision:
Dietitians apply scientific knowledge about food and nutrition to individuals and groups in states of health and disease to promote optimal health within the social, economic and cultural context of the New Zealand population. (Dietitians Board, "Scope of Practice".)
As part of the multidisciplinary team, the dietitian is vital to:
- guide decisions about the route and timing of nutrition therapy
- assess the patient's nutritional needs
- monitor fluid and electrolyte status
- monitor blood glucose control
- initiate use of specialised enteral and parenteral products
- adjust the nutrition care plan to specific disease state and changes in the patient's clinical condition.

- Inpatient services provided on non-stat days
Referral Expectations
Referrals are prioritised according to departmental triage guidelines and the quality of the referral itself. The department accepts referrrals from all health professionals. Self referrals are not accepted.
Charges
New Zealand citizens or those who have obtained permanent residence are entitled to publicly funded health care.
Non-residents may be required to pay for their health care.
