Description
BreastScreen Auckland Central is part of BreastScreen Aotearoa, the national breast screening programme for women.
Breast screening is now extending beyond ages 45–69, beginning with women aged 70 and 74 from October 2025, with full extension to include all women up to age 74 by 2029.
You can have a free mammogram (breast screen) every two years if:
· You have no symptoms of breast cancer
· Have not been diagnosed with breast cancer within the last 5 years.
· You have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months
· You are not pregnant
· You are eligible for public health services in New Zealand
Age Extension:
From October 2025, breast screening will gradually be extended. Extending the age to include all women up to 74 will be fully in place by the end of 2029. This extension will be phased in over four years, allowing breast screening and cancer treatment services to meet the increased demand.
Women can check their eligibility using the Age Extension Eligibility Calculator on the official Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora website.

A mammogram is a special type of x-ray used only for the breast. Mammography can be used either to look for very early breast cancer in women without breast symptoms (screening) or to examine women who do have breast symptoms (diagnostic). What to expect? You will need to undress from the waist up. One of your breasts will be positioned between two plastic plates which will flatten the breast slightly. Most women find that this is a bit uncomfortable, but not painful. Generally two x-rays are taken of each breast. It is also useful to compare the results with earlier examinations and you should take any previous mammography results with you.
