Decortication

Removal or the stripping off of a thick fibrous membrane (scar tissue) that develops over the pleura. This constricts the lung and interferes with lung expansion. Decortication may be needed after an effusion of fluid inbetween the pleura, after an empyema caused by infection, or due to mesothelioma (a cancerous condition often linked to asbestos exposure).
