VATS (Video Assisted Thorascopic Surgery)

VATS is a method of accessing the chest using small incisions instead of a thoracotomy. It is still performed under general anaesthesia but the recovery is often easier than after having a full thoracotomy. VATS may be used for a pleurodesis to repair a collapsed lung, or for obtaining a sample of lung or lymph tissue to biopsy. Chest drainage is often still required afterwards.
