Public Service

Description

Namaste, Xin Chao, An-nyong Ha-Se-Yo, Sa-wat-dee, 你好, Mabuhay, Welcome!

Counties Manukau Health Asian Mental Health Service is a support and advocacy service, promoting awareness of mental health issues in Asian communities and engaging Asian communities within Counties Manukau Health.

Asian Mental Health Service does not provide treatments or therapy for Asian people with mental health concerns – these services are provided by other teams at Counties Manukau Health - Mental Health Services.

Who Do We Help?

Asian people can come from a number of cultural backgrounds and may be descended from a wide variety of counties in East Asia (such as China, Japan, and Korea), Southeast Asia (such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) and Central Asia (such as India and Afghanistan). We provide information and advice for people from Asian backgrounds who are concerned about mental health.

How Do We Help?

The goal of our service is to ensure Asian people have equal access to mental health and addiction services in Counties Manukau. We do this through a number of projects and resources, these include:

  • Translated mental health information - see below for brochures in a variety of Asian languages
  • Information on Asian community resources, such as counsellors
  • Community support services, including peer activity groups, family support groups, and psycho-education workshops
  • Advice for health professionals working with Asian communities
  • Advocacy for Asian communities
  • Engaging Asian communities with mental health services.

Some of the programmes we run include:

  • Together Little Angels Soar – workshop and support group for Chinese families who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Together We Recover – workshop and support group for Chinese families who have adults with mental health issues
  • Asian Plus+ – activity group for Asian mental health services users
  • Enriching Lives – collaborative programme for people with mental health and substance use and/or justice concerns, provided  in partnership with police and a variety of community services
  • Annual community mental health initiatives for Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Korean and Japanese communities
  • The ‘Long Game’ groups – interagency groups who promote and advocate the mental health needs of Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Korean and Japanese communities
  • Asian Mental Health & Addictions Staff Forum – where Asian mental health and addiction staff and students network and support each other
  • Placements for students with an interest in Asian mental health.

If you would like to find out more about any of these projects please contact Asian Service Development Coordinator Kitty Ko on (09) 538 0700.
