Formerly Southern DHB Older Persons Mental Health Services
Provides community support for older people with mental health issues, alongside inpatient and day units at Dunedin Hospital.
Southern DHB Older Persons' Mental Health Services are provided at Dunedin Hospital and Southland Hospital.
Dunedin Hospital provides inpatient services for older people at Ward 6C and a day-based service at the Gibson Day Unit. Community Psychiatric Nurses and Nurse Practitioners also support Older Persons' Mental Health Services in the community.
A community based team provides service for the Southland area and is based out of Southland Hospital.

Fees and Charges Description
There are no fees for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full cost of any medical treatment you recieve during your stay.

The Mental Health for Older Person’s service provides assessment and treatment for those aged 65 and over, in the Southern DHB region, who have an identified moderate to severe mental illness (including Dementia with behavioral and psychological disturbance) which is causing significant dysfunction and / or enduring disability. The team aims to help people live as full a life and independently as possible. Appointments can be provided in a variety of settings including home, rest home or Community Mental Health offices.

Referral Process
Referrals can be received from your GP and other health professionals. To aide in treatment we require a recent comprehensive physical examination, including all recent laboratory results from your General Practitioner.
For Dunedin, Central Lakes and Waitaki, referrals are via the MHSOP team based at Ward 6C, Dunedin Hospital. Once a referral is recieved it is passed to the appropriate rural team or is taken on by the Dunedin staff. Some referrals are made directly with the rural teams, in which case they inform the consultant who arranges an appointment at their rural clinic, where possible.
For Invercargill Older Persons Mental Health Services, referrals are via Single Point of Entry.
