The Hospital and Specialist Dentistry is a regional service managed by the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) with the majority of clinics held at Greenlane Clinical Centre, Middlemore Hospital, Buckland Road and the Māngere Refugee Centre.

Children and adults from the Waitemata DHB are treated at Greenlane Clinical Centre.

The service also holds clinics and inpatient and day stay operating sessions at Greenlane Clinical Centre, Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore Hospital, Waitakere Hospital and Quay Park Surgical Centre.

Most dental services for the Counties Manukau population are provided at the Oral Health Clinic at Middlemore Hospital and Buckland Road Southern Cross Campus at Māngere.

THE HOSPITAL AND SPECIALIST DENTISTRY SERVICE DOES NOT PROVIDE ROUTINE DENTAL SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC

Services Provided by the Hospital and Specialist Dentistry Service

Emergency relief of pain clinics and alternative providers for people with Community Services Cards only
Primary care (community) dental services for IHC and special needs adults and children.
Secondary services (hospital) for medically compromised patients including cardiac, oncology, respiratory, immunocompromised.
Cleft lip and palate and orthodontics (for craniofacial and cleft lip and palate patients only).
Tertiary services (complex hospital) in both inpatient and outpatient settings across the Auckland region.
After hours on-call regional acute service for oral surgery.

Subspecialty Groups Include:

Special needs children and adults.
Mental health inpatients only.
Emergency relief of pain clinic - an emergency service for the treatment of acute toothache (Community Service Card Holders only).
Paediatrics - referred to Hospital and Specialist Dentistry by the School Dental Service, private dentists, general practitioners and specialists.
Oral medicine.
Orthodontics - this service is available to children with craniofacial and cleft lip and palate only.
Periodontics - this service is available to special needs, medically compromised and oncology patients referred for the management of severe gum disease.
Restorative dentistry / cleft lip and palate - this service is based at Middlemore Hospital and works closely with the CMDHB Plastic Surgery Team.
Prosthodontics - assists with the restoration of dental function to patients being treated for head and neck cancer.
Artificial eyes, nose and ears - artificial prostheses are made for patients referred to the laboratory service from specialists and other hospitals.
Mobile Surgical Bus - children can be treated on the surgical bus that visits Pukekohe and Wellsford every six weeks. Children are booked onto the bus through Oral Health.
Refugee Centre - this is a relief of pain clinic for refugees arriving in New Zealand.
Laboratory services - the laboratory provides specialised services to patients being treated for head and neck cancer.

Services Not Provided by the Hospital and Specialist Dentistry Service

All routine dental services including:

Fillings
Scale and cleans
Root canal fillings
Any restorative work such as crowns or dentures.

Patients must visit a private dentist for this type of dental work.

Fees and Charges Description

Hospital and Specialist Dentistry Fee Schedule - for NZ Residents

Surgical Extraction

There is a user part charge for the surgical extraction of teeth.
If the surgical extraction is performed under local anaesthetic or oral sedation, the cost will be $100 - $200.
If the surgical extraction is under general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation, the cost will be $350 - $400.
The cost to you will be discussed at the time of your consultation.
It is preferable to pay the fee on the day of the procedure.
Patients who cannot afford to pay can apply for a loan through WINZ. You will need to contact WINZ to see if you qualify. Our dentist(s) can provide you with a quote for treatment to take to WINZ.

Relief of Pain Service for Community Service Card holders only

$40.00, this needs to be paid on the day of treatment.
The $40.00 user part charge covers the consultation time and x-ray if required. If you are required to come back for further treatment or you decide to seek private dental treatment, this does not mean that the RPO consultation is free.
Some treatments will have an extra charge, for instance, the extraction of wisdom teeth under local or general anaesthetic costs $180 - $360 (please read above for more details).
The Oral Health staff will advise you of any additional charges.

Non Residents

There are additional charges for non residents, which will need to be paid before you have a consultation and/or treatment.

Wisdom tooth and impacted tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth are the third molars right at the back of your mouth. They usually appear during your late teens or early twenties. If there is not enough room in your mouth they may partially erupt through the gum or not at all. This is referred to as an impacted wisdom tooth. Due to their location wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean and are more susceptible to decay, gum disease and recurrent infections. They can cause crowding of teeth and, on rare occasions, cysts and tumours develop around them. Your dentist will advise if some or all of your wisdom teeth need to be removed. Wisdom teeth will usually only be removed if your dentist believes they will be a significant compromise to your oral health. Impacted tooth extraction Your dentist may recommend extraction if you are at significantly greater risk of infection or tooth decay. Impacted teeth may be removed by your dentist or they may refer you to an oral & maxillofacial surgeon. An incision (cut) is made in your gum and access to the impacted tooth cleared by pushing aside gum tissue and, if necessary, removing some bone. The tooth is removed whole or in pieces and the gum stitched together over the hole.

An incision (cut) is made in your gum and access to the impacted tooth cleared by pushing aside gum tissue and, if necessary, removing some bone. The tooth is removed whole or in pieces and the gum stitched together over the hole.

Dental implants

Gum tissue at the site of the implant is opened up to expose the bone. The bone is drilled and a titanium implant is inserted where the root of your tooth had been. Once the bone and gum has healed (3-6 months), the post is attached to the implant and the crown is placed over the post and cemented into place.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery

Arthroscopic: several small incisions (cuts) are made over the joint in front of the ear. A small telescopic instrument with a tiny camera attached (arthroscope) is inserted, allowing the surgeon a view of the joint. Small instruments can be inserted into the other cuts to free up the joint by e.g. removing adhesions and scarring, or repositioning a disc. Arthroplasty (open surgery): an incision is made in front of the ear, giving the surgeon access to reconstruct the joint by e.g. smoothing joint surfaces, repairing discs or removing diseased tissue. If a joint replacement is necessary, a second incision under the angle of the jaw may be required.
