School and Adolescent Dental Service

The School Dental Service provides free dental care at school-based clinics for children from pre-school through to the end of primary or intermediate school. Parents are encouraged to enrol their children into the service from the age of two. This helps them get to know their dental therapist and become used to the dental clinic.

Children are assessed according to their dental needs and treated as required by a dental therapist and a dental assistant. Most dental clinics are permanently located on school grounds. The Central Wellington region is also serviced by four mobile clinics.

Where children need special dental services that cannot be provided by a dental therapist they may be referred to a dentist for free treatment. You can view a list of current contracted providers www.ccdhb.org.nz/Services/Dental/Dentists_list.pdf  for these services.

How to enrol
You can enrol by:

  • downloading and printing the enrolment form
  • picking up a copy of the enrolment form at your local dental clinic, school, Plunket, or a variety of other health and community organisations.

Return the completed form to your nearest dental clinic or to the regional office at Hutt Hospital, High Street, Private Bag 31-903, Lower Hutt.

Please make sure you fill out all parts of the form and sign the "agreement for service" section at the end.

For all enquiries about under 18s free dental care you can phone 0800 825 583.

Free basic dental treatment is available for all teenagers until the day before their 18th birthday, although you will need to check that the dentist of your choice provides this service.

What is basic dental treatment?

Your dentist will be able to tell you what treatment is available for free under the adolescent contract.

Basic treatment includes:

  • an annual check-up
  • examination and radiographs if necessary
  • fissure sealants where relevant
  • other preventative treatment like fluoride application
  • root canal fillings
  • extraction (but not orthodontic extractions)
  • oral health education and encouragement to continue good oral health.

How to enrol

You will need to check that your chosen dentist is accepting new enrolments. Your school nurse or the Adolescent Oral Health Service can also recommend a contracted dentist close to you.
