The frenulum is the band of tissue under the tongue between the base of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. Occasionally this band of tissue is very tight which means that the tip of the tongue is not as mobile as it should be (tongue tie). If the tongue is forked when it sits in the mouth or by the time it gets to the lips then there is a severe tongue tie. Most patients have mild tongue ties which we do not offer to operate on as they improve with age, but if the tongue tie is severe we would offer to operate on it.
This is done as a daystay case under general anaesthetic.
