Paediatric Surgery

Paediatric Surgery provides a 24-hour 7 day per week acute service based at Wellington Hospital. There are only four Paediatric Surgical units in the country (Starship in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch are the others). We operate and provide clinics at Wellington Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital, Porirua. Our catchment area for tertiary paediatric surgery is from Wanganui and Hawke's Bay south. We have outreach clinics in Palmerston North, Hawke's Bay and Wanganui.

The age range for Paediatric Surgery is until age 16 years. Paediatric surgery has a wide scope of practice which includes neonatal, head and neck, thoracic, urological, oncology and general surgery in children.

Where possible, surgery is done on a daystay basis and we are using Kenepuru Hospital to do a lot of our daystay cases. For more complex operations or patients, or for out-of-town patients, operations are done at Wellington Hospital. Our operating days are Tuesday morning at Kenepuru or Wednesdays and Fridays at Wellington Hospital.
Outpatient Clinics are held every Monday afternoon at Wellington Hospital and once a month at Kenepuru Hospital. Paediatric Outpatient Clinics are held in the Grace Neill Building.

Our Outreach Clinics are once a month to Palmerston North, once a month to Hawke's Bay and four times a year to Wanganui.
