The vulva and vagina of young girls can easily become infected and irritated; vulvovaginitis is an inflammation of the vulva and the vagina.
The vulva is the outside of the female genital area; it includes the labia (lips) and the openings of the vagina and bladder.
Children with vulvovaginitis may have pain, itching and burning around the vagina, a vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding and pain when passing urine. Sometimes the discharge can be a bit offensive in smell.
