Description

The Regional Huntington Disease (HD) Service offers assessment, management  and clinical support to patients with HD in the Auckland and Northland regions. We collaborate closely with Genetics, Neurology, Liaison Psychiatry, the HD Youth Organisation, and other HD organisations in various capacities. Additionally, we liaise with other Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora) services in Auckland, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), primary healthcare providers, Kaikaranga (previously Taikura Trust) and other mental health services.
 
We provide psychosocial assessments, presymptomatic and predictive HD testing, and collaborate with the Auckland Genetics Service for fertility treatment options. 
 
Referrals for clinical assessment and management are accepted from primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers using the relevant referral form, which can be submitted by email or through the Clinical Regional Portal (CRP). Our service works flexibly with other providers to offer service coordination, psychological treatment, psychiatric management, and follow-up care for HD-related needs. We also provide support and education for caregivers and healthcare staff regarding HD management.
 
The service operates part-time hours and will strive to respond to messages and inquiries as soon as possible, typically within 72 hours. Our model is based on elective outpatient and community services. For acute mental health support, please contact the Mental Health Crisis Services within the relevant Health New Zealand's catchment area.

We are a regional service with four clinics across Northland.
Our clinicians work part-time between Monday and Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
