Description

What is contraception?

Contraception is a way to prevent pregnancy. There are different methods of contraception. Please click on the following links for more information about different methods of contraception:

It can be helpful to talk to a health professional to decide the best method of contraception for you.

Where can I access free or low-cost contraception services?

There are clinics in the Auckland and Waitematā District Health Board areas that provide contraception services.

Contraception services include consultations about contraception with health professionals as well as the insertion or removal of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). Some of these services are offered free to those who are eligible.

You do not need to be enrolled with any of these clinics or to have been there before. Find a clinic that suits you and call to make an appointment. Please discuss with the clinic whether you are eligible for free or low-cost services.

Referral Expectations

You may contact the clinic that suits you to book an appointment. Bookings are preferred but some clinics may offer walk-in appointments.

Eligibility

To access free or low-cost contraception services, you must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen or resident
  • live within the Auckland or Waitematā districts.
