Qualifications

MB ChB 2006 Otago; FRACP 2017 - Internal medicine

Profile

I am a Consultant General and Renal Physician, practising full-time in the public health system, at Southland Hospital, since 2017.

I was born and raised in Palmerston North. I graduated from Otago Medical School in 2006, with an MB ChB with Distinction, and prizes and distinctions in Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. I undertook some of my training at Southland Hospital. I also completed a Bachelor of Medical Science with First Class Honours research degree. I undertook my specialist training throughout New Zealand, including at Dunedin, Hawke’s Bay, Waikato, Middlemore and Auckland City Hospitals. I completed my Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2017, specialising in both General Medicine and Renal Medicine.

As a General Physician, I have a broad and in-depth knowledge and experience of all areas of Internal Medicine. I diagnose and treat the full spectrum of medical problems in my patients, not limited by organ system. More than this, I take a holistic approach to my work. My patients are not ‘diseases’ and ‘diagnoses’, but fellow human beings, for whom I am privileged to care. I place patients and their families / whānau at the centre of what I do, involving them fully in their own healthcare. I am a “team player”, and value my close, friendly working relationships with medical colleagues, nursing and allied health staff.

My love of the broad, complex, undifferentiated and challenging nature of secondary hospital General Medicine led to me chose Southland Hospital. In the absence of the sub-specialists of a tertiary hospital, as a general physician I take responsibility for all the medical problems my patients may have. I collaborate closely with my valued sub-specialist colleagues in the care of my patients.

As a Renal Physician, I provide specialist inpatient and outpatient care to patients with kidney problems, collaborating closely with my renal colleagues in Dunedin.

In addition to my clinical work, I am passionate about medical education. As a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medicine with Otago Medical School, I often have 4th year and 6th year medical students working with me. I was awarded the 2018 Otago Medical School Invercargill Campus Senior Medical Officer Award for Excellence in Teaching. I am closely involved in the training and supervision of resident doctors. As Director of Physician Education, I am responsible for physician trainees undertaking their RACP specialist training in Medicine at Southland Hospital. I am an RACP clinical examiner. I presented an invited talk at the 2018 Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) scientific conference.
