We are a dedicated team of specially trained doctors and nurses.  All of our team have been trained in sexual assault care and forensic medicine by the national organisation, Medical Sexual Assault Clinicians Aotearoa (MEDSAC).

The Pohutukawa Clinic is a specialist medical service for adults (of all genders) who have been sexually assaulted or abused. (For younger adolescents and children contact Te Puaruruhau on (09) 307 2860 between 8am - 5pm, if outside of these hours contact your local Police or Crisis Counselling service).

The team offers a 24-hour urgent medical service for acute cases and runs a day clinic Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.

Services we offer include:

  • Privacy and confidentiality.
  • Help with making decisions about police reporting.
  • If you are choosing to report to the police, special forensic examinations can be done.
  • Medical advice and assessment about any sexual assault or abuse - recent or historic.  This can include a sexual health check and appropriate medication if required.
  • A general well-being health check in a supportive environment.
  • Referral and liaison with community services: social support services, GP, refuges and court support services.
  • Family violence intervention and support
  • We take self-referrals and referrals from GPs, Counsellors, Family Planning, Police and other agencies
