Profile

I have been a Registered Midwife for 16 years and have a background in Intensive Care Nursing and High Risk Maternity Care. I have been an Independent Midwife for 13 years having practised for 11 years in Glen Innes and then a further 2 years in Henderson providing antenatal, labour and postnatal care for women of all cultures and ethnic backgrounds. I have recently joined Midwives Out West and look forward to working with Helen, Linda and Karen.

I was born in Pakistan and came to New Zealand when I was 17 years old. My father is Australian and my mother Indian so I enjoy working with women from different ethnic groups and cultures. I used to be a graphic artist and worked at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising as well as other advertising agencies for 15 years before deciding to train as a nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit at Greenlane Hospital. I changed to midwifery after a few years and worked as a staff midwife at National Women's High Risk Medical Clinic working with women who had diabetes and other medical problems before becoming an Independent Midwife in 1996. I am also a mother of two children and have two grandchildren.

I became a midwife because I wanted to make a difference to women. I enjoy working with women and their families and want to make their birthing experiences as positive as possible. I believe midwifery is a partnership between the woman and the midwife based on trust, in which decisions are made together so that the best possible outcomes are achieved.
