Papakura Obstetric Hospital came into being in 1958 following the takeover from the Auckland Hospital Board. Prior to this time the unit was known as Ellerdine and was established in 1943 - 1944 following the purchasing of the Willis family homestead.

This historical farmhouse is now the home of the Papakura Birthing Unit. It is situated close to the main town centre of Papakura and serves the Manurewa, Clendon, Wattle Downs, Conifer Grove, Takanini, Papakura, Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Ōrere Point, Hunua, Paparimu, Drury, Hingia and Karaka areas. However, women from other areas are also welcome to use this facility.

Features of the unit include:

3 birthing rooms (1x labour pool)
Approximately 250 women birth in this Unit per year
600 women return from Middlemore Hospital for their postnatal stay
Baby-Friendly Hospital accreditation since October 2007. The unit prides itself in supporting women who choose to breastfeed, with a high exclusive breastfeeding rate on discharge
Antenatal clinics by community midwives and lead maternity carers (LMC)
Obstetric consultant clinic every Wednesday afternoon for women who require secondary care (higher risk pregnancies). Referral by your LMC/named midwife is required

Fees and Charges Description

There are no charges for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the Eligibility Directions specified criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full costs of any medical treatment you receive during your stay. A summary of costs is available from Maternity Administration, Middlemore Hospital.

Interpreting and Translation Services (ITS)

Welcome to the Te Whatu Counties Manukau Interpreting and Translation Service. ITS is affiliated to Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau and provides interpreting and translation service solutions to a number of government and private agencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As part of our commitment to providing a quality service, interpreting is provided free within Counties Manukau District and to Primary Healthcare providers. The use of interpreters is highly recommended; interpreting services are important to healthcare as they allow complete communication between a patient and the healthcare provider. Failing to use a competent interpreter runs a high risk of inadequate communication that could result in misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. The service currently employs over 230 dedicated interpreters who are available to interpret assignments in more than 90 languages and dialects. We pride ourselves on being able to offer some of the best interpreters who specialise in the areas of Medical, Courts, Police and Government Agency interpreting. Our team of interpreters and translators works to meet service requirements and deadlines by providing interpreting on site, via the telephone or video conferencing. Native speaking interpreters and translators interpret in Asian - African - European - Middle Eastern – and Pacific Island languages. Our booking office is based in the Call Centre at the Manukau SuperClinic in Manurewa, South Auckland. It is staffed by a team of coordinators from 8:00am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. After hours requests are managed by the South Pacific Air Ambulance Service who are specialists in dealing with urgent requests. The same booking processes are followed however, due to the urgent nature of after hours requests, you need to phone through details of your request. They will look after the rest. Visiting Hours

Visiting times are between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.
Women need rest to recover during their hospital stay. Visiting times and the number of people allowed to visit are limited.
Fathers of newborn babies are welcome to visit any time during daytime hours. Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult and must not run around the ward.
Visitors are restricted to two at a time. If you wish to visit outside these hours, please discuss this with your Midwife beforehand. Please refrain from visiting if you or your children are unwell with illness, including flu or chickenpox.

Refreshments

There are cafes and takeaway shops located within a short walking distance of the Unit.

Public Transport

Public bus and train services are located within a short walking distance of the Maternity Unit.

Parking

There is plenty of free parking available to all patients and visitors.

Patients may be set down or picked up from outside the main entrance but this area is also our ambulance access. Please consider others and remove cars as soon as possible.

Accommodation

The unit consists of the following postnatal room layout:

5 single
2 x two bedded

For women who live in the area and birth at Middlemore Hospital, it is likely that you will need to transfer to Papakura for your postnatal stay.

Security

To keep you and your baby safe, our doors are locked and access is via a buzzer system. If for any reason you need to leave your room, your baby should be cared for by a relative of your choice or the staff in the unit.
