Description

Dr Mark Gittos is a consultant cosmetic (plastic) surgeon who qualified from the Auckland University Medical School in 1984. He completed his plastic surgery training in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, France and the UK.

In 1996 he became a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at The Saint Andrews Centre for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Essex, where he helped to establish the Basildon Breast Unit. He promoted the concept of immediate reconstruction after mastectomy surgery for breast cancer, and developed the skin-sparing mastectomy.

Mark left the NHS in 2003 to focus on full-time private practice. He has avoided sensationalist media coverage and instead has made a number of documentaries with The Discovery Channel.

Mark was the lead reconstructive plastic surgeon at The London Breast Clinic. He performed over 300 breast enlargement, uplift and reduction operations per year; as well as multiple body sculpturing procedures including liposculpture, liposuction, tummy tucks and male breast reduction (gynaecomastia/MOOBS). He also performed facial rejuvenation procedures such as mini and full facelift, nose reshaping, upper and lower eyelid surgery, fat transfer, laser and chemical peels.

Mark also operates regularly on patients with skin cancer, hand injuries, trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome.

PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY

I am committed to uncompromising personal service and technical excellence in the care of my patients. I will always give you an honest opinion - if a procedure is not right for you, or if your expectations are unrealistic, I will tell you.

I invest considerable time pre-operatively to ensure my patients are well informed on the benefits and risks of surgery, and the likely outcome. You will always have at least two consultations with me before surgery.

Above all, I am a doctor first and foremost - my patients' wellbeing and safety is my priority.

PERSONAL PROFILE

Mark's interests include reading, motor sport, rugby, running and aviation. He has his Private Pilots Licence and has completed the London Marathon (slowly).

What is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery covers a wide range of different surgical procedures that repair, reconstruct or replace structures in many different parts of the body including the skin, face and head, hands, breast and stomach. Plastic surgery does not involve the use of plastic materials.
Plastic surgery can generally be divided into two main types:

  • Reconstructive surgery: is performed on parts of the body that are abnormal or have been affected by a birth defect, accident or disease. This includes cleft lip and palate repair, scar revision or reconstruction (including skin grafts) following burns. Surgery is usually performed to improve function, but may also be performed to bring the appearance of a part of the body as close as possible to normal.
  • Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery: improves appearance or body image by reshaping features of the face or body e.g. breast enlargement, face lift, liposuction.
