Description

Dr Eileen Merriman is a consultant haematologist and the clinical director of haematology and lead thrombosis clinician at North Shore Hospital in Auckland.
Eileen has a sub-specialist interest in venous thromboembolism and offers a private virtual NZ-wise thrombosis service (VTE only) via Thrombocare Specialists e.g. deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, superficial vein thrombosis and less usual venous site thrombosis e.g. cerebral, intra-abdominal, as well as advice regarding thrombosis risk related to hormonal medications such as HRT and contraceptive medications.
Appointments will be conducted via Zoom, or if the patient does not have access to this, then Telehealth appointments can be provided. Face-to-face appointments can be made in certain instances, if an examination is felt to be required for assessment/management.

What is Haematology?
Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the blood and blood-forming organs. Such disorders may involve the:

  • components of blood (cells and plasma)
  • coagulation (blood clotting) process
  • blood cell formation
  • haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein on red blood cells) synthesis.

To help in the diagnosis of blood disorders, you will probably have to have blood samples taken for analysis in the laboratory. These may include:

FBC (Full Blood Count): gives information on the number of cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets) in your blood.

INR (International Normalised Ratio): monitors your clotting function when on warfarin (anticoagulant/anticlotting) therapy.

Coagulation/Clotting Screen:  a group of tests to check coagulation or clotting function.

Doctors who specialise in haematology are called haematologists.
