Emergency Department | Counties Manukau | Te Whatu Ora

Public Service, Emergency

The Emergency Department at Middlemore Hospital is for life-threatening emergencies.  Call 111 in an emergency, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Your family doctor is the first place you should go for help.  They will provide you with medical advice, and prescriptions and help you to manage any long-term conditions.  If you do not have a family doctor you can find one on Healthpoint.

The Emergency Department has specialised areas for resuscitation and monitoring. There are 27 adult assessment rooms, two adult procedure rooms, a dedicated plastering room, and an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) room.  There are also 24 beds in the adult short-stay area for patients with an 'expected' discharge period within 24 hours from arrival that are utilised by all teams providing acute care.

The Emergency Department has a separate area for paediatric services (Kidz First Emergency Care).  This includes two resuscitation rooms, 14 acute assessment rooms and a procedure room.  There are also 13 beds in the paediatric short-stay area.

Accident and Medical clinics in the Counties region also provide after-hours care.  Lower after-hours charges apply 6pm - 8am weekdays, all weekend and every public holiday. Scroll down to view details for alternative Accident and Medical clinics in the Auckland Region.

Referral Expectations

Approximately 1/3 of the patients seen in Emergency Care are referred by a primary healthcare practitioner directly to an inpatient team. The remaining 2/3 of the patients self-present to Emergency Care.

Visiting Hours

Disposable medical-grade face masks must be worn when inside our facilities. If you do not have one, we can provide one for you to use. Reusable cloth masks, scarves, bandannas, or t-shirts cannot be used when visiting a health facility.

Visitors with service or guide dogs are permitted if they comply with hospital policy and other local guidelines.

Home-cooked food can only be delivered directly to patients by visitors. It cannot be left to be collected.

General Policy:
We will support patients to have a maximum of three visitors at any one time between 8am and 8pm.

One visitor can visit overnight (8pm-8am) if prearranged with the ward charge nurse or midwife manager.
